Royal Opera House
Project Details
Project Description
Originally a rest area for staff at the Royal Opera House, the decking area was to be re-purposed as part restaurant, part relaxation area, part meeting space and part open air dance training studio.
The Outdoor Deck Company were commissioned to install the Grad Decking System and Kebony deck boards.
The finished deck is part of a major transformation of the Royal Opera House by Stanton Williams and has been open to the public from September 2018.
Rawden Pettitt, Associate Director, Stanton Williams commented:
“The ‘Open Up’ project at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, designed by Stanton Williams, has transformed key public areas of the building and produced a new state-of-the-art theatre, creating a welcoming, inclusive and inspiring environment for all. The new public spaces will provide a calm, elegant backdrop for events and activities throughout the day and will enable greater engagement between visitors and the artistic work that is produced by one of the world’s pre-eminent opera houses.
“As part of the architectural interventions in the building, the existing roof terrace – previously only open to ticket holders – has been transformed into the new Amphitheatre Terrace, and is open throughout the day on a year-round basis to the general public and theatre-goers alike. With spectacular views across Covent Garden Piazza and the London skyline, a new, high-quality timber deck is in place across the entirety of the terrace. Delivered by Outdoor Deck Company, Stanton Williams naturally consulted them during the design stages, after several successful previous collaborations. Their advice and installation helped achieve the high level of quality that Stanton Williams has come to expect from Mike, Gary and the rest of the team. The result plays an important role in the overall visitor experience to the Royal Opera House, and we look forward to embarking on future projects together.”
